For crop-based biogas plants, the cost for buying the crops is a predominant production cost and efficient systems for production, harvesting, transportation and storage are therefore of major importance. Furthermore, the competition on land between food and energy production has impacted the discussion. EU has decided to strongly limit the production of transportation fuel based on crops grown on arable land, a decision that affects crop-based biogas production. For this reason, it is interesting to examine ways to reduce substrate costs for crops as well as to find alternative crops that are not competing with food production.

In March, f3 announced the finished project Techno-economic analysis of biomethane production with novel upgrading technology that had been performed within the f3 and Swedish Energy Agency collaborative research program Renewable transportation fuels and systems (Förnybara drivmedel och system). At that point, only part of the results were available due to ongoing peer review of a second scientific article from the project.

This second article has now been published and therefore the final project report has also been made available on the...

One of the first projects to start within f3 was titled Optimal localisation of second generation biofuel production in Sweden and became what would be the first in a series of three projects called BeWhere Sweden. The project series has investigated different factors affecting cost efficiency in production of forest based biofuels. The focus has been on placement of the production plants with the help of development of an geographically explicit model that takes a number of different conditions into account.

The third part of the project series is still on-going and is carried out within the f3 and...

Registration is now open for the concluding conference for the f3 and Swedish Energy Agency collaborative research program Renewable transportation fuels and systems (Förnybara drivmedel och system). The conference is held in Uppsala on 25-26 October and arranged by f3 and the Swedish Energy Agency jointly with SLC, the Swedish Life Cycle Center.

Come and take part of presentations of results from 29 projects within the research program, learn about the current plans and efforts of the Swedish Energy Agency regarding renewable fuels, take part in an acitivity arranged by SLC, engage in mingle and networking and much more. A detailed program will be available later.

Local and regional authorities have an important role in the transition to fossil-free transport systems, but there is uncertainty regarding what choices to make in procurement as well as long-term planning. A recently finished project within the f3 and Swedish Energy Agency collaborative research program Renewable transportation fuels and systems (Förnybara drivmedel och system) has aimed at analyzing how visions and strategies in sixteen Swedish municipalities can be used to strengthen the understanding of the actions needed, what information is needed in different situations, and how available ICT solutions support decision-...

During the spring, seven new small f3 projects were granted funding from f3 partners and started their work. The projects have the following titles and project managers:

  • Vehicles and infrastructure for heavy long-haul transports fueled by electricity and hydrogen
    Stefan Grönkvist, KTH

  • Evaluation of biofuel production costs in relation to the new reduction obligation quota system
    Erik Furusjö, IVL

  • ...

In the GreenPilot project a pilot boat is converted to operate on methanol, thus opening up to a more sustainable and competitive coastal and inland transport. The project started in March of 2016 and will go on until 2018.

On June 15th, a seminar was arranged in Gothenburg to present the outcome and lessons learned so far. The program included presentations from actors of relevance to the project, among them f3, which was presented by Johanna Mossberg. Julia Hansson, IVL, talked about the project Prospects for renewable marine fuels that is carried out...

Biomass gasification is an attractive technology that efficiently converts forest biomass, biomass-based wastes and other types of renewable feedstocks into transportation fuels, chemicals or electricity. The technology has great potential to significantly contribute to the national targets of a fossil fuel independent vehicle fleet by 2030 and the vision of a fossil-free society by 2045.

With regard to biomass gasification plants, one important bottleneck for commercialization is the choice of engineering solutions for the downstream product gas cleaning and conditioning, before using the produced synthesis gas. The main aim of a newly finished f3 study has been to make a...

In order to meet future environmental targets and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, biofuels are likely to represent a significant part of the fleet, both through the low admixture during a transitional phase, but increasingly with high biofuel blends to phase out fossil fuels.

A newly finished project within the collaborative research program Renewable transportation fuels and systems (Förnybara drivmedel och system) run by f3 centre and the Swedish Energy Agency has had the purpose of developing a better understanding of the barriers that currently exists for an increased use of high blend ethanol (especially E85...
