One of the objectives of the collaborative research program Renewable transportation fuels and systems (Förnybara drivmedel och system) as well as f3 itself, is to provide scientifically based knowledge on sustainable renewable transportation fuels to relevant stakeholders. Now, the number of scientific publications as deliveries from  projects is growing. In the beginning of May 2017, at least 21 articles had been published in well-known journals such as Sustainability, Journal of Cleaner Production, Applied Energy and Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefinery, etc.

A list of these articles, including links and references to the related...

Since 2014, f3 has been functioning as the officially appointed Swedish advocacy platform towards renewable fuels R&I in Horizon 2020 and EU-related strategies and priorities for future R&I. Until July 2018, f3's activities in this area are supported financially from the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova.

Based on a common map of research and innovation in the EU on renewable fuels, Platform f3 has identified which issues that are important from a Swedish and science-based...

Many municipalities in Sweden have requirements on green cars in the procurement of municipal vehicles and some also have requirements on electric cars. A newly written report from the project Public procurement as a policy instrument to promote the diffusion and use of renewable transport fuels has looked into the aspects of green public procurement in Malmö and Östersund, two Swedish cities that have come relatively far regarding requirements on electric cars. The project has also compared the procurement of bus traffic in the two regions Skåne and Jämtland and analysed how they use...

In 2014, the Swedish Energy Agency reported a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 1.95 M tonnes of CO2-eq due to the replacement of fossil fuels with biofuels. However, a narrow focus on CO2 fails to capture the additional benefits biofuel production may have. Studies often indicate that agricultural and biomass production systems have the potential to provide considerable socio-economic benefits, but that the level of detail and clarity regarding benefits provided by expanded biomass production and biofuel process industries are insufficient. Further, the significant focus...

The principal products of the bioeconomy are biobased products and bioenergy, while the fundamental technology, introduced to replace petroleumbased refineries, is biorefineries. Thus, biorefineries underpin the future of many biobased products such as liquid biofuels for transport. Even though biorefinery ideas are increasingly discussed on paper, the adoption by Swedish industry and integration in existing infrastructures is limited. This could partly be explained by the demand for transition between technological systems on co-evolutionary processes including changes in governing institutions, regulation, markets, user practices and industrial structure. In other words,...

The programme for the 2017 International Advanced Biofuels Conference (ABC) in Gothenburg on 17-19 May is now available! The conference covers long-term policy, business opportunities, technological innovations and much more regarding the development and use of advanced biofuels in aviation, maritime and land transport. ABC is arranged by Svebio with f3 as one of the co-arranging partners. Others include Aebiom, World Bioenergy Association and IEA Bioenergy.

f3 chairs session on renewable fuel mythbusting

Today, the debate runs high on renewable fuels, their...

A lot of activities regarding future transport and alternative transport fuels are currently ongoing within different contexts in the EU. Recently, three new publications (two reports and one memo) were published from the Sub-group on Advanced Biofuels, active within the European Commission's Expert Group on alternative transport fuels, the Sustainable Transport Forum (STF). The publications are included in the f3 library on external resources and can be accessed here:

Electrofuels, also known as e.g. power-to-gas/liquids/fuels, e-fuels, or synthetic fuels, are synthetic hydrocarbons, e.g. methane or methanol, produced from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water with electricity as primary energy source. They are interesting for several reasons, e.g. they could play an important role as future transport fuel, store intermittent electricity production or provide an opportunity for biofuel producers to increase the yield from the same amount of biomass. However, there is a lack of energy system studies of electrofuels.

Maria Grahn, Chalmers, has been leading a project performed together with IVL with the overall purpose to deepen the...

There is a growing interest for electrofuel processes among biogas producers, which can be associated with a potential for these processes to increase the profitability for biogas plants and make them more product flexible and less sensitive to market flutuations. However, the general view of the Swedish biogas industry is that it is difficult to overview the techno-economic performance and degree of maturity of the different processes. Knowledge about the technology readiness level (TRL) concern in particular the biological electrofuel processes.

A recently finished small f3-project has had the aim to present this, and...
